The Vitamin D Foundation

Our Action Declaration:

The Vitamin D Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to saving hundreds of thousands of lives by offering support to groups and individuals who:

1) Recognize that vitamin D deficiency affects 1 billion people worldwide, including a majority of North Americans according to the most conservative estimates.

2) Understand that vitamin D deficiency is well established in the medical literature as a major contributing factor for most forms of cancer as well as heart disease, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, type I diabetes and many other disorders. Hundreds of studies have now established both the mechanism explaining the association between vitamin D deficiency and increased incidence of these diseases as well as the extent to which vitamin D deficiency increases risk.

3) Acknowledge that sunlight exposure is the body's natural, intended and most efficient source for vitamin D, that indoor lifestyles have unnaturally deprived most of us from attaining natural vitamin D levels and that overzealous sun-protection and sun avoidance causes vitamin D deficiency.

4) Are committed to action. Public health interventions to increase average vitamin D blood levels to natural levels - no less than 50 ng/ml as recognized by The Vitamin D Council - will save thousands of lives, promote better health and ultimately reduce health care costs.
